Scissors, a tool used for cutting various materials, have a history that spans thousands of years. The earliest known scissors date back to ancient Egypt around 1500 BCE. These were crafted from a single piece of bronze, forming a U-shaped spring mechanism that required squeezing to cut. This design is quite different from modern scissors, which use a pivot point.

The Romans improved upon the Egyptian design around 100 CE by introducing pivoted scissors. These had a design similar to what we recognize today, with two blades connected at a pivot point, allowing for a more efficient cutting motion. This innovation spread throughout Europe and the Middle East, becoming a common household tool.

During the Middle Ages, scissors were made by blacksmiths and were often tailored for specific tasks such as shearing sheep or cutting fabric. In the 18th century, advances in metallurgy and mass production techniques allowed for more widespread and affordable access to scissors. In 1761, Robert Hinchliffe, an Englishman, became the first to produce fully hardened and polished cast steel scissors, setting a standard for quality.
